Bottle Bill Defeated!

Thanks to the more than 100,000 emails, faxes, and letters that you sent in to Connecticut General Assembly members, the expanded bottle bill has been defeated! Thank you for voicing your opinion and helping us defeat this unnecessary bill.

Over the coming months, Connecticut No Water Tax Coalition members will be working on a number of pilot projects to help local municipalities increase their curbside recycling. We'll let you know more about these programs and other efforts we are engaging in to encourage curbside recycling.

Finally, it's likely that the General Assembly will once again try to expand the bottle bill next year. We'll be sure to let you know if similar legislation is introduced in 2008.

Once again, thank you for your support!

The Connecticut No Water Tax Coalition

A Simple Equation: Adding All non-Carbonated Beverages to The Bottle Bill Is A Waste Of Your Money And Time!

Last year Connecticut legislators proposed adding bottled water to the state's "bottle bill."  This year they are pushing legislation to include a mandatory 5¢ deposit on ALL non-carbonated beverage containers including bottled water, juices, iced tea, and other non-carbonated drinks. This legislation (bill No. 1289) -- would be costly, inconvenient, and ineffective.

1. It’s a hidden tax on the Bottled bEVERAGES you drink.

2. It’s a hassle you don’t need.
Who wants to separate juice and water bottles from other containers and drag them back to the store? Redeeming containers is slow and inefficient. Putting these bottles in your curbside bin with the rest of your recyclables takes less time and costs a lot less.

3. It will have virtually no impact on litter.
Non-carbonated beverage containers account for less than 2% of litter and millions of them are already being returned through convenient curbside recycling – which is four times less expensive than the bottle bill.

Contact your state representatives today!
Ask them to curb the cost, keep it in the bin, and scrap the bottle bill expansion!
